Born on May 5, 1987, in Sofia, Bulgaria, Matakiev showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He was enrolled in the National School of Music "Lyubomir Pipkov" in Sofia, where he studied under the guidance of renowned Bulgarian pianist and pedagogue, Prof. Stella Dimitrova. Matakiev's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly rose to prominence in the Bulgarian music scene. He won his first national piano competition at the age of nine and went on to win numerous other competitions throughout his teenage years. In 2004, he was awarded the Grand Prix at the International Piano Competition "Young Virtuosos" in Sofia, which marked a turning point in his career. Following his success at the "Young Virtuosos" competition, Matakiev was invited to perform at major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe and Asia. He made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall in 2005, performing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. The performance was met with critical acclaim, and Matakiev was praised for his technical prowess and emotional depth. Over the years, Matakiev has collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. He has also performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Suntory Hall in Tokyo. Matakiev's repertoire is diverse and includes works by classical composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin, as well as contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt and Philip Glass.
