The Porter String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1998 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Porter String Quartet were violinists David Porter and Daria Adams, violist Sarah Johnson, and cellist Michael Brown. All four musicians had extensive experience performing in various orchestras and chamber groups before coming together to form the quartet. They quickly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the classical music world, earning critical acclaim for their technical prowess and musical sensitivity. One of the highlights of the Porter String Quartet's early career was their performance at the prestigious Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2001. The quartet was one of only ten ensembles selected from around the world to compete in the event, which is widely regarded as one of the most important competitions for string quartets. The Porter String Quartet's performance was praised by the judges and they were awarded the top prize, which included a recording contract with the prestigious Naxos label. Since their win at the Banff competition, the Porter String Quartet has gone on to perform at some of the world's most renowned concert halls and music festivals. They have been featured at the Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the Wigmore Hall in London, among many others. They have also been invited to perform at numerous music festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Ravinia Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. One of the hallmarks of the Porter String Quartet's performances is their commitment to exploring a wide range of musical styles and genres. While they are best known for their interpretations of classical and romantic repertoire, they have also delved into contemporary music and have commissioned works from some of today's most innovative composers. Their recordings reflect this diversity, with albums featuring works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Mozart alongside pieces by contemporary composers such as John Adams and Philip Glass.
