Born in 1959 in Washington D.C., Kelly grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. Kelly started playing the viola at the age of nine, and by the time he was in high school, he was already performing with the National Symphony Orchestra. Kelly attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with William Lincer and Lillian Fuchs.
