The ensemble was founded in 1945 by the Dutch government as part of the Netherlands Broadcasting Foundation (NOS). The orchestra and chorus were created to provide high-quality classical music performances for radio broadcasts and live concerts. The Hilversum Radio Symphony Orchestra & Chorus has had many notable members throughout its history. The first conductor of the orchestra was Paul van Kempen, who led the ensemble from 1945 to 1951. Other notable conductors who have led the orchestra include Bernard Haitink, Jean Fournet, and Edo de Waart. The chorus has also had many notable conductors, including Klaas Stok and Gijs Leenaars. Over the years, the Hilversum Radio Symphony Orchestra & Chorus has performed many notable works and has received numerous awards and accolades. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was its 1951 performance of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8, which was broadcast live on the radio and is still considered one of the greatest performances of the work. The orchestra and chorus have also performed many other works by Mahler, as well as works by other notable composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Mozart. In addition to its live performances, the Hilversum Radio Symphony Orchestra & Chorus has also recorded many albums and has won several awards for its recordings. The ensemble's recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 won the Edison Award in 1952, and its recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 won the same award in 1963. The orchestra and chorus have also won several other awards for their recordings, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis. Throughout its history, the Hilversum Radio Symphony Orchestra & Chorus has remained committed to providing high-quality classical music performances for audiences around the world. The ensemble has performed in many countries, including the United States, Japan, and Australia, and has collaborated with many notable soloists and conductors.
