Sheridon Stokes was born on May 12, 1965, in London, England. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Stokes showed a keen interest in music and began playing the flute at the age of six. Stokes received his early education at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned flutist William Bennett. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree. Stokes' career as a professional musician began in the early 1990s when he joined the London Symphony Orchestra as their principal flutist. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented flutists of his generation, and his performances were praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. Throughout his career, Stokes has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Zubin Mehta. One of the highlights of Stokes' career came in 1998 when he performed as a soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms. His performance of Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 1 was widely praised, and he received a standing ovation from the audience. Stokes has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1995, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for the future. He has also been awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist Award and the British Flute Society's Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition to his work as a performer, Stokes is also a respected teacher and mentor. He has taught at the Royal Academy of Music, the Juilliard School, and the Manhattan School of Music, and has mentored many young flutists who have gone on to successful careers in music. Stokes' repertoire is vast and varied, ranging from Baroque and Classical music to contemporary works. He has recorded numerous albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Bach's Sonatas for Flute and Harpsichord with harpsichordist Richard Egarr.
