Role:Composer PerformerBirth:1950Period:ContemporaryModernGenre:ChamberConcertoKeyboardJay Reise is an American composer of classical music, known for his unique style and innovative approach to composition. Born in 1950 in New York City, Reise grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a composer and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Reise began his formal music education at the age of six, studying piano and composition with his mother. He later attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he studied composition with David Del Tredici and Vincent Persichetti. After graduating, he went on to study at the Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in composition. Throughout his career, Reise has been influenced by a wide range of musical styles and traditions, including jazz, rock, and world music. He has also been inspired by the works of composers such as Stravinsky, Bartok, and Messiaen, and has incorporated elements of their styles into his own compositions. One of Reise's early works, "The Emperor's New Clothes," was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1976. The piece, which is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, features a narrator and a large orchestra, and is notable for its use of unconventional instruments such as a slide whistle and a kazoo. In the 1980s, Reise began to experiment with electronic music, incorporating synthesizers and other electronic instruments into his compositions. His piece "The Divine Comedy," which was premiered in 1985, features a combination of live and electronic instruments, and is based on Dante's epic poem of the same name. Reise's most famous work is perhaps his opera "Rascher's Journey," which was premiered in 1997. The opera tells the story of Sigurd Rascher, a famous saxophonist who fled Nazi Germany and eventually settled in the United States. The piece features a large cast of characters and a complex score that incorporates elements of jazz, classical music, and world music. In addition to his work as a composer, Reise has also been active as a teacher and mentor. He has taught at a number of institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania and the Curtis Institute of Music, and has mentored a number of young composers who have gone on to successful careers in music. Throughout his career, Reise has been recognized for his contributions to the world of classical music. He has received numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. His works have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, and he continues to be a major force in the world of contemporary classical music.More....
