Born in Rome, Italy in 1975, Piastra showed an early aptitude for music and began studying piano at the age of six. His talent was quickly recognized, and he was accepted into the prestigious Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome at the age of ten. Under the tutelage of renowned pianist Sergio Perticaroli, Piastra honed his skills and developed a deep love for the music of the great composers of the classical and romantic eras. He also began to perform publicly, winning his first competition at the age of twelve and going on to win numerous awards and accolades throughout his teenage years. After completing his studies at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory, Piastra continued his education at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he studied with pianist and conductor Bruno Canino. He also spent time studying with other renowned pianists, including Lazar Berman and Aldo Ciccolini, and attended masterclasses with luminaries such as Martha Argerich and Maurizio Pollini. Piastra's talent and dedication paid off, and he began to gain recognition as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation. In 1995, he won first prize at the prestigious Busoni International Piano Competition, cementing his reputation as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the next several years, Piastra continued to perform and record extensively, earning critical acclaim for his interpretations of works by composers such as Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. He also began to collaborate with other musicians, including violinist Salvatore Accardo and cellist Mario Brunello, and to perform with major orchestras around the world. One of the highlights of Piastra's career came in 2003, when he was invited to perform at the Salzburg Festival, one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in the world. His performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Vienna Philharmonic was widely praised, and cemented his reputation as one of the leading pianists of his generation. In addition to his performing career, Piastra has also been active as a teacher and mentor to young musicians. He has taught at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Conservatorio di Musica "Giuseppe Verdi" in Milan, and has given masterclasses around the world.
