Robert Bode is a renowned conductor, composer, and educator in the world of classical music. Born in 1964 in Seattle, Washington, Bode grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He later studied choral conducting and composition at the University of Washington, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree. After completing his undergraduate studies, Bode went on to earn a Master of Music degree in choral conducting from the University of Southern California. He then pursued further studies in conducting at the Aspen Music Festival and School, where he worked with renowned conductors such as James Conlon and Leonard Slatkin. Bode's career as a conductor began in earnest in the early 1990s, when he was appointed the director of choral activities at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. During his tenure there, he led the Conservatory Concert Choir and Conservatory Singers in numerous performances, including collaborations with the Kansas City Symphony and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. In 1998, Bode was appointed the director of choral activities at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he continued to build his reputation as a conductor and educator. He also served as the artistic director of the Milwaukee Choral Artists, a professional women's choir that he founded in 1998. Throughout his career, Bode has been recognized for his exceptional talent and contributions to the world of classical music. In 2001, he was awarded the prestigious Louis Botto Award for Innovative Action and Entrepreneurial Zeal by Chorus America, a national organization that supports and promotes choral music. He has also been a finalist for the American Prize in Choral Conducting on multiple occasions. In addition to his work as a conductor, Bode is also an accomplished composer. His compositions have been performed by numerous choirs and ensembles, including the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Kansas City Chorale. He has also served as a guest conductor and clinician for choirs and orchestras across the United States and in Europe. One of the highlights of Bode's career as a conductor came in 2011, when he was appointed the artistic director of the Choral Arts Society of Washington, D.C. Under his leadership, the Choral Arts Society has become one of the premier choral organizations in the United States, known for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. During his tenure with the Choral Arts Society, Bode has led the ensemble in numerous performances at prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center and the National Cathedral. He has also collaborated with a wide range of artists and organizations, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington National Opera, and the Smithsonian Institution. In recognition of his contributions to the world of classical music, Bode has received numerous awards and honors. In 2016, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Washington School of Music, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He has also been recognized by the American Choral Directors Association and the National Endowment for the Arts. Throughout his career, Bode has remained committed to promoting the importance of choral music and the arts in general. He has served on the boards of several arts organizations, including Chorus America and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and has been a vocal advocate for arts education in schools.
