The Baltimore Choral Arts Society Chorus is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over 50 years. Founded in 1965 by the late Robert Pierce, the ensemble has become a staple of the Baltimore music scene, known for its exceptional choral singing and innovative programming. The ensemble's founding was inspired by Pierce's vision of creating a world-class choral ensemble that would bring together the best singers in the Baltimore area. Pierce, who was a professor of music at Goucher College, had a passion for choral music and believed that Baltimore had the talent and resources to create a top-tier ensemble. With the help of a group of dedicated singers and supporters, Pierce founded the Baltimore Choral Arts Society Chorus and began building a reputation for excellence. Over the years, the ensemble has attracted some of the most talented singers in the Baltimore area, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in music. The ensemble's current artistic director, Anthony Blake Clark, has continued Pierce's legacy of excellence, leading the ensemble to new heights of artistic achievement. One of the highlights of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society Chorus's history was its performance at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration. The ensemble was invited to perform at the Inaugural Prayer Service, which was attended by President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. The ensemble's performance was widely praised for its beauty and emotional power, and it helped to cement the ensemble's reputation as one of the finest choral ensembles in the country. In addition to its performance at the Presidential Inauguration, the Baltimore Choral Arts Society Chorus has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades over the years. The ensemble has won multiple awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. The ensemble has also been recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council for its contributions to the cultural life of the state. The Baltimore Choral Arts Society Chorus has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and conductors in the world, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated composers of our time, including John Adams, Philip Glass, and Jennifer Higdon. One of the ensemble's most memorable performances was its 2015 concert at Carnegie Hall, which featured a program of works by American composers. The concert was a celebration of the rich tradition of American choral music, and it showcased the ensemble's exceptional musicianship and artistry. The Baltimore Choral Arts Society Chorus has also been a champion of new music, commissioning and premiering works by some of the most exciting young composers of our time.
