He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father, Gustav Riefling, was a well-known pianist and composer, and his mother, Ingeborg Riefling, was a singer. Robert Riefling began playing the piano at a young age and showed great talent and promise. He studied at the Oslo Conservatory of Music and later at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. He also studied with renowned pianists such as Artur Schnabel and Edwin Fischer. Riefling made his debut as a pianist in 1932, performing with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and skilled pianist, and his performances were praised for their technical precision and emotional depth. Throughout his career, Riefling performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States. He played with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He also performed as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with other renowned musicians such as violinist Yehudi Menuhin and cellist Pablo Casals. One of Riefling's most notable performances was his 1950 debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He received critical acclaim for his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, and the New York Times praised his "brilliant technique and sensitive musicianship." Riefling was also a prolific composer, and his works were performed by many leading orchestras and musicians. His compositions were influenced by his Norwegian heritage and often featured elements of folk music and nature. In addition to his performances and compositions, Riefling was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Oslo Conservatory of Music and later at the Norwegian Academy of Music. He also served as a juror for many international music competitions, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Throughout his career, Riefling received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1952, he was awarded the King's Medal of Merit by the Norwegian government for his cultural achievements. He was also made a Knight of the Order of St. Olav in 1961. Robert Riefling continued to perform and compose music until his death on December 5, 1987, in Oslo, Norway.
