The Capitol Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Washington, D.C. The orchestra was founded in 1963 by conductor Louis Lipnik and a group of musicians who were interested in creating a professional orchestra in the nation's capital. The orchestra's founding members included musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra, the United States Marine Band, and other local ensembles. The group's first performance was held in 1964 at the National Gallery of Art, and the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. Over the years, the Capitol Symphony Orchestra has featured a number of talented musicians and conductors. Some of the orchestra's most notable members have included violinist Glenn Dicterow, who later became concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, and conductor Leonard Slatkin, who served as the orchestra's music director from 1979 to 1996. Under Slatkin's leadership, the Capitol Symphony Orchestra became known for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. The orchestra premiered a number of new works by American composers, including John Corigliano's Symphony No. 1 and William Bolcom's Symphony No. 4. In addition to its commitment to contemporary music, the Capitol Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its performances of classical repertoire. The orchestra has performed works by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms, and has collaborated with a number of renowned soloists, including pianist Emanuel Ax and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the orchestra's most notable performances took place in 1987, when it performed at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony. The orchestra accompanied singer Aretha Franklin as she performed a tribute to honoree Ray Charles, and the performance was widely praised for its energy and musicality. In addition to its performances, the Capitol Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its educational outreach programs. The orchestra has worked with local schools and community organizations to provide music education and performance opportunities to young people, and has been recognized for its commitment to promoting music education in the Washington, D.C. area. Over the years, the Capitol Symphony Orchestra has received a number of awards and honors for its performances and contributions to the arts. In 1990, the orchestra was awarded the Mayor's Arts Award for Excellence in an Artistic Discipline, and in 1995, it received the Washington Post Award for Excellence in the Arts. Despite facing financial challenges in recent years, the Capitol Symphony Orchestra remains committed to its mission of providing high-quality classical music performances and educational programs to the Washington, D.C. community. The orchestra continues to perform regularly at venues throughout the city, and its members remain dedicated to promoting the importance of music in the lives of people of all ages.
