Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a singer. Barth began playing the flute at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Barth's early musical education was shaped by her parents, who encouraged her to explore a wide range of musical styles. She studied classical music with local teachers and also played in jazz and rock bands. In high school, Barth was a member of the Oregon All-State Band and Orchestra and won several awards for her flute playing. After graduating from high school, Barth attended the University of Oregon, where she studied with flutist Doris Koppelman. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree in 1997 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. There, she studied with Bradley Garner and earned her degree in 1999. Following her studies, Barth began her professional career as a flutist. She joined the contemporary music ensemble eighth blackbird in 1999 and quickly became an integral member of the group. With eighth blackbird, Barth performed at major venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Barbican Centre in London. The group also won several awards, including three Grammy Awards for Best Chamber Music Performance. In addition to her work with eighth blackbird, Barth has also performed as a soloist and chamber musician. She has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including pianist Ursula Oppens, cellist Matt Haimovitz, and composer Steve Reich. Barth has also premiered works by many contemporary composers, including David Lang, Jennifer Higdon, and John Luther Adams. Throughout her career, Barth has been recognized for her exceptional talent and contributions to the world of music.
