Born on August 6, 1948, in Reading, Pennsylvania, Altmeyer grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. Her father was a music teacher, and her mother was a pianist. Altmeyer's love for music began at an early age, and she started taking piano lessons when she was just five years old. Altmeyer's talent for singing was discovered when she was a teenager.
