Erik Nielsen is a renowned classical music conductor who has made a significant impact on the world of classical music. Born in 1974 in Edmonton, Canada, Nielsen grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a professional trumpet player, and his mother was a music teacher. From a young age, Nielsen was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano and trumpet. Nielsen attended the University of Toronto, where he studied music theory and composition. He also studied conducting with Raffi Armenian and David Zafer. After completing his undergraduate degree, Nielsen went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Otto-Werner Mueller. Nielsen's career as a conductor began in 2002 when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Canadian Opera Company. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was appointed as the company's resident conductor in 2006. During his time with the Canadian Opera Company, Nielsen conducted numerous productions, including Verdi's "La Traviata" and Mozart's "The Magic Flute." In 2009, Nielsen was appointed as the principal conductor of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra in Spain. This was a significant milestone in his career, as it was his first appointment as a principal conductor. During his time with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, Nielsen conducted numerous concerts and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 1. In 2013, Nielsen was appointed as the chief conductor of the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra. This was a highly prestigious appointment, as the Frankfurt Opera is one of the most renowned opera houses in the world. During his time with the Frankfurt Opera, Nielsen conducted numerous productions, including Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" and Strauss's "Salome." Nielsen's talent as a conductor has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades. In 2010, he was awarded the Jean-Marie Leclair Prize by the French Academy of Fine Arts. This award is given to young musicians who have made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. In 2014, Nielsen was awarded the Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation Award, which recognizes outstanding Canadian conductors. Nielsen's career as a conductor has been marked by numerous highlights and achievements. He has conducted some of the most renowned orchestras and opera houses in the world, and his recordings have received critical acclaim.
