The Hurwitz Chamber Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1969 by violinist and conductor, Robert Hurwitz. The ensemble is known for its unique blend of classical and contemporary music, and has become one of the most respected chamber ensembles in the world. Robert Hurwitz was born in New York City in 1938, and began playing the violin at a young age. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music, and later became a member of the New York Philharmonic. In 1969, Hurwitz decided to form his own chamber ensemble, with the goal of exploring new and innovative approaches to classical music. The Hurwitz Chamber Ensemble's first performance was in 1970, and the group quickly gained a reputation for its dynamic and engaging performances. The ensemble's early members included Robert Hurwitz on violin, as well as cellist David Soyer, violist Toby Appel, and pianist Charles Wadsworth. Over the years, the Hurwitz Chamber Ensemble has featured a rotating cast of musicians, with Robert Hurwitz remaining at the helm as conductor and artistic director. The ensemble has performed all over the world, including at major music festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival. One of the Hurwitz Chamber Ensemble's most notable performances was in 1987, when the group performed at the White House for President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan. The ensemble also performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and has been featured on numerous radio and television programs. In addition to its live performances, the Hurwitz Chamber Ensemble has also recorded several albums, including "Mozart: The Piano Quartets," "Brahms: The Piano Quartets," and "Beethoven: The String Quartets." The ensemble's recordings have received critical acclaim, and have been praised for their technical precision and emotional depth. Throughout its history, the Hurwitz Chamber Ensemble has received numerous awards and honors. In 1983, the ensemble was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Mozart's Piano Quartets. The group has also been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, and has received grants from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ford Foundation. Despite its many accomplishments, the Hurwitz Chamber Ensemble remains committed to its original mission of exploring new and innovative approaches to classical music. The ensemble continues to perform and record, and remains one of the most respected and influential chamber ensembles in the world.
