He was the son of a Belgian father and a French mother, and his family was deeply involved in the arts. Alain began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He continued his studies at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of Nadia Boulanger, a renowned composer and teacher. After completing his studies, Alain began his career as a concert pianist, performing in major cities throughout Europe and the United States.
