Ram Narayan's father was his first guru, and he started learning sarangi at the age of six. He also received vocal training from his father and learned to play the tabla from his elder brother, Chatur Lal. Ram Narayan's family moved to Jaipur when he was a teenager, and he continued his music education under the guidance of Ustad Allauddin Khan, the founder of the Maihar gharana. He has composed several ragas, including Hem Bihag, Lalit, and Shree. His compositions are a blend of traditional and modern styles, and they showcase his mastery of the sarangi. Ram Narayan's most famous composition is the raga Manj Khamaj. This raga is a fusion of two ragas, Manj and Khamaj, and it is known for its haunting melody. Ram Narayan's rendition of this raga is considered a masterpiece, and it has inspired many musicians. Ram Narayan has received several awards and honors for his contribution to Indian classical music. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2005, two of the highest civilian awards in India.
