Role:EnsembleEmpyrean Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1993 by a group of musicians who were passionate about contemporary music. The ensemble is based in Davis, California, and is affiliated with the University of California, Davis. The founding members of Empyrean Ensemble were pianist and composer Richard Swift, flutist and composer Laurie San Martin, and clarinetist and composer Ross Bauer. The ensemble has since expanded to include a rotating roster of musicians, including some of the most talented performers and composers in the contemporary classical music scene. Empyrean Ensemble is known for its innovative programming, which often features works by living composers alongside more traditional classical repertoire. The ensemble has premiered numerous new works by composers such as Kaija Saariaho, John Zorn, and Steve Reich, and has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including dancers, visual artists, and poets. One of the highlights of Empyrean Ensemble's career was its performance at the 2006 Ojai Music Festival, where the ensemble presented a program of works by composers such as György Ligeti, Morton Feldman, and John Cage. The performance was widely praised for its adventurous programming and virtuosic playing. Empyrean Ensemble has also been recognized for its recordings, which include several critically acclaimed albums of contemporary classical music. The ensemble's 2009 album, "The Music of Kaija Saariaho," was named one of the best classical albums of the year by The New York Times. In addition to its performances and recordings, Empyrean Ensemble is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly presents workshops and masterclasses for students and young musicians, and has collaborated with local schools and community organizations to bring classical music to a wider audience. Overall, Empyrean Ensemble is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that has made a significant contribution to the contemporary classical music scene. With its adventurous programming, virtuosic playing, and commitment to education and outreach, the ensemble is sure to continue to inspire and delight audiences for years to come.More....
