Born on 12th June 1924 in London, England, Gomersall was the son of a music teacher and a pianist. His parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Gomersall began his musical training at the age of six, learning to play the piano and the violin. He showed exceptional talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. At the age of ten, he made his debut performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, playing the violin concerto by Felix Mendelssohn. Gomersall continued his musical education at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under some of the most renowned music teachers of the time. He excelled in his studies and was awarded several prizes and scholarships for his outstanding performances. In 1942, Gomersall joined the Royal Air Force and served as a pilot during World War II.
