Born in Germany in 1970, Lichtenberg grew up in a musical family and began playing the mandolin at the age of six. She began performing in public at the age of eight and won her first competition at the age of nine. By the time she was a teenager, she was already an accomplished musician and had won numerous awards and accolades. In 1989, Lichtenberg enrolled at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg, Germany, where she studied with the renowned mandolin player and teacher, Marga Wilden-Hüsgen. She graduated with honors in 1994 and went on to pursue a career as a professional musician. Lichtenberg's career took off in the late 1990s, when she began performing with the German mandolin orchestra, Mandolinata.
