Holiday grew up in a working-class family and attended St. Silas School in Liverpool. Holiday's love for music began at an early age. He started singing in the church choir and later joined a local band called The Fourtones. In 1953, he auditioned for the BBC talent show "Opportunity Knocks" and won the competition. This led to his first recording contract with Columbia Records. Holiday's first single, "The Story of My Life," was released in 1954 and became an instant hit. The song reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and stayed in the charts for 21 weeks. This was followed by a string of successful singles, including "Love Letters in the Sand," "Starry Eyed," and "The Gal with the Yaller Shoes." Holiday's popularity continued to grow, and he became a regular on television shows such as "The Benny Hill Show" and "The Ed Sullivan Show." He also appeared in several films, including "The Tommy Steele Story" and "Just for Fun." In 1958, Holiday was invited to perform at the Royal Variety Performance, which was attended by Queen Elizabeth II. He sang his hit song "Starry Eyed" and received a standing ovation from the audience. This performance helped to cement his status as one of Britain's top singers. Holiday's success continued throughout the 1960s, and he released several more hit singles, including "The Green Leaves of Summer," "In Love," and "Softly, Softly." He also recorded several albums, including "Michael Holiday Sings," "The Michael Holiday Show," and "The Best of Michael Holiday." In 1961, Holiday was awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for his song "The Story of My Life." This award is given to British songwriters and composers for their outstanding contributions to the music industry. Holiday's career was tragically cut short when he died in a car accident on March 29, 1963, at the age of 34. He was on his way to a concert in Bristol when his car crashed into a tree. His death was a shock to the music industry and his fans, who mourned the loss of one of Britain's most beloved singers.
