He was born on September 16, 1950, in Reykjavik, Iceland. From a young age, Sigurdur showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study music at the Reykjavik College of Music, where he honed his skills as a pianist. Sigurdur's talent as a musician was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. He won his first national piano competition at the age of 12 and went on to win several other competitions throughout his teenage years. In 1968, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, where he studied under the renowned pianist and teacher, Carl Seemann. After completing his studies in Salzburg, Sigurdur returned to Iceland and began his career as a professional musician. He quickly established himself as one of the leading pianists in the country and began performing regularly at concerts and recitals. In 1972, he made his debut with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. Over the years, Sigurdur has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, and Daniel Barenboim. One of Sigurdur's most significant achievements was his performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in 1987. The performance was recorded and released on CD, and it quickly became one of the best-selling classical recordings in Iceland's history. The recording also received critical acclaim and helped to establish Sigurdur as one of the leading pianists of his generation. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Sigurdur has also been an active chamber musician. He has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. He has also collaborated with many of Iceland's leading musicians, including the cellist Sigurdur Bjarki Gunnarsson and the violinist Judith Ingolfsson. Sigurdur's contributions to the world of music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1988, he was awarded the Icelandic Music Prize, the country's highest honor for musicians. He has also been awarded the Order of the Falcon, Iceland's highest civilian honor, and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
