Rafael Mangasarian was a renowned classical music artist who was born on December 22, 1922, in Istanbul, Turkey. He was the son of Armenian parents who had migrated to Turkey. Mangasarian's father was a musician, and he introduced his son to music at a young age. Mangasarian showed a keen interest in music and started playing the piano when he was just five years old. Mangasarian's family moved to the United States in 1929, and he continued his music education there. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1943. He then went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he received his Master of Music degree in 1945. Mangasarian's talent as a pianist was recognized early on in his career. He won several awards and competitions, including the Naumburg Award in 1948, which is one of the most prestigious awards for young musicians in the United States. He also won the Philadelphia Orchestra's Young Artists Competition in 1949. Mangasarian made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1949, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. He received critical acclaim for his performance, and it marked the beginning of his successful career as a concert pianist. Mangasarian went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Mangasarian was known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Brahms. He was particularly renowned for his performances of Beethoven's piano sonatas, which he recorded for the RCA Victor label in the 1950s. In addition to his career as a concert pianist, Mangasarian was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Juilliard School of Music, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as pianists themselves. Mangasarian received many honors and awards throughout his career. In 1963, he was awarded the Order of Merit by the government of Austria for his contributions to the arts. He was also awarded the Medal of Honor by the Armenian government in 1992. Mangasarian continued to perform and teach until his death on December 31, 2002, at the age of 80. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest pianists of his generation, and his recordings continue to be admired by music lovers around the world.
