Klaus Lang is a contemporary classical music composer and performer from Austria. He was born on June 17, 1971, in Graz, Austria. Lang grew up in a musical family, and his father was a composer and conductor. He started playing the piano at a young age and later studied composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. Lang's music is known for its minimalist and meditative qualities, often incorporating elements of silence and repetition. He has been influenced by the works of composers such as Morton Feldman, Giacinto Scelsi, and John Cage. Lang's compositions often explore the relationship between sound and space, and he has created works for a variety of settings, including churches, museums, and public spaces. Lang's career as a composer began in the early 1990s, and he quickly gained recognition for his unique style. In 1994, he was awarded the State Scholarship for Composition by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture. This award allowed him to study with the renowned composer Luigi Nono in Venice, Italy. Throughout the 1990s, Lang's music was performed at festivals and concerts throughout Europe. In 1997, he was awarded the Erste Bank Composition Prize, which is one of the most prestigious awards for contemporary music in Austria. This award helped to establish Lang as one of the leading composers of his generation. In the early 2000s, Lang's music began to gain international recognition. He was invited to participate in the prestigious Donaueschingen Festival in Germany in 2002, and his work was performed at the festival's opening concert. Lang's music was also featured at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in the UK in 2003. In 2004, Lang was awarded the Outstanding Artist Award by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture. This award recognized his contributions to the field of contemporary music and helped to further establish his reputation as a leading composer. Lang's music has been performed by some of the world's leading ensembles and orchestras, including the Arditti Quartet, the Ensemble Modern, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with a number of other artists, including the choreographer Meg Stuart and the visual artist Olafur Eliasson. One of Lang's most notable works is his cycle of pieces for organ, titled "Mehr Licht." The cycle was commissioned by the St. Stephan's Cathedral in Vienna and was premiered in 2008. The cycle consists of seven pieces, each of which is named after a different color. The pieces are performed on the cathedral's historic organ, which dates back to the 18th century. Lang's music has been praised for its ability to create a sense of stillness and contemplation. His use of silence and repetition has been compared to the work of other minimalist composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Lang's music has also been described as having a spiritual quality, with many of his works exploring themes of transcendence and the search for meaning. In addition to his work as a composer, Lang is also an accomplished performer. He has performed as a pianist and organist in concerts throughout Europe and has recorded several albums of his own music. Lang has also taught composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz and has been a guest lecturer at a number of other institutions.
