Lausanne Sinfonietta is a classical music ensemble based in Lausanne, Switzerland. The ensemble was founded in 1980 by a group of young musicians who were passionate about chamber music and wanted to create a platform for themselves to perform and showcase their talents. The founding members of Lausanne Sinfonietta were violinist Jean-Claude Fasel, cellist Jean-Paul Dessy, and pianist Jean-Jacques Dünki. They were soon joined by other talented musicians, including violinist Gilles Colliard, violist Jean-Luc Darbellay, and clarinetist Michel Westphal. From the beginning, Lausanne Sinfonietta was committed to performing a wide range of classical music, from the Baroque era to contemporary works. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming, which often included lesser-known works alongside more familiar pieces. Over the years, Lausanne Sinfonietta has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors, including Martha Argerich, Heinz Holliger, and Emmanuel Krivine. The ensemble has also performed at major music festivals around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. One of the highlights of Lausanne Sinfonietta's career was its performance at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. The ensemble was invited to perform at the opening ceremony, where they played a piece by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. The performance was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world and helped to raise the profile of the ensemble. In addition to its live performances, Lausanne Sinfonietta has also recorded extensively. The ensemble has released over 30 albums, including recordings of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, as well as contemporary composers such as György Ligeti and Arvo Pärt. Lausanne Sinfonietta has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1999, the ensemble was awarded the Prix de la Fondation Vaudoise pour la Culture, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the arts in the canton of Vaud. In 2003, Lausanne Sinfonietta was awarded the Swiss Music Prize, which is the highest honor for music in Switzerland. Today, Lausanne Sinfonietta continues to be one of the leading classical music ensembles in Switzerland and beyond. The ensemble is known for its innovative programming, high-quality performances, and commitment to promoting classical music to new audiences. With a roster of talented musicians and a rich history of achievements, Lausanne Sinfonietta is sure to continue making an impact on the classical music world for years to come.
