The Orchestre Symphonique de la Vallée-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent (OSVHSL) is a classical music ensemble based in the region of the same name in Quebec, Canada. The orchestra was founded in 2005 by a group of local musicians and music enthusiasts who wanted to bring classical music to their community. The founding members of the OSVHSL included conductor and music director Jean-François Rivest, violinist and concertmaster Marie-Claude Rivest, and cellist and artistic director Jean-Philippe Tremblay. The orchestra started with just a handful of musicians, but quickly grew in size and reputation. One of the highlights of the OSVHSL's early years was their performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in 2007. The concert was a huge success, with a packed audience and rave reviews from critics. This performance helped establish the orchestra as a major cultural institution in the region. Over the years, the OSVHSL has continued to grow and evolve. Today, the orchestra has over 50 members, including both professional musicians and talented amateurs. The ensemble performs a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary, and has collaborated with a number of renowned soloists and conductors. One of the OSVHSL's most notable collaborations was with pianist Alain Lefèvre in 2012. Lefèvre joined the orchestra for a performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, which was met with standing ovations and critical acclaim. The concert was later released as a live recording, which helped further raise the orchestra's profile. In addition to their regular concert series, the OSVHSL has also performed at a number of festivals and special events. One of their most memorable performances was at the 2017 Montreal International Jazz Festival, where they played a program of jazz-inspired classical music to a packed audience. The OSVHSL has also been recognized for their contributions to the cultural life of the region. In 2015, they were awarded the Prix Arts-Affaires de la Montérégie, which recognizes outstanding partnerships between businesses and cultural organizations. The orchestra was recognized for their collaboration with local businesses to promote classical music in the community. Despite their success, the OSVHSL remains committed to their original mission of bringing classical music to their community. They continue to perform regularly in the region, and have even started a youth orchestra to inspire the next generation of musicians. In conclusion, the Orchestre Symphonique de la Vallée-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent is a remarkable classical music ensemble that has made a significant impact on the cultural life of their region. From their humble beginnings to their current status as a major cultural institution, the orchestra has remained true to their mission of bringing classical music to their community. With their talented musicians, innovative programming, and commitment to excellence, the OSVHSL is sure to continue making beautiful music for years to come.
