André Gagnon was a Canadian composer and pianist who was born on August 2, 1936, in Saint-Pacôme, Quebec. He was the youngest of nineteen children in his family, and his parents were both musicians. His father played the violin, and his mother played the piano. Gagnon began playing the piano at the age of six, and he showed a natural talent for music from an early age. Gagnon's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He studied at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec in Montreal, where he was trained in classical piano and composition. He also studied with the renowned French pianist Yvonne Hubert. Gagnon began his career as a composer in the 1960s, and he quickly gained a reputation for his innovative and experimental approach to music. He was influenced by a wide range of musical styles, including classical, jazz, and pop music. He was particularly interested in the use of electronic instruments and synthesizers, which he incorporated into his compositions. Gagnon's early works were characterized by their avant-garde style and their use of unconventional instruments and sounds. He was one of the first Canadian composers to experiment with electronic music, and he was a pioneer in the use of synthesizers in classical music. In the 1970s, Gagnon began to focus more on composing music for film and television. He wrote the score for several Canadian films, including "Mon oncle Antoine" and "Les Plouffe." He also composed music for television shows, including "The National Dream" and "The Littlest Hobo." Gagnon's most famous work is his "Neiges" suite, which he composed in 1975. The suite is a collection of ten pieces for solo piano, and it is inspired by the winter landscape of Quebec. The suite became an instant classic and has been performed by pianists around the world. In addition to his work as a composer, Gagnon was also an accomplished pianist. He performed in concert halls around the world, and he was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to connect with audiences. Gagnon continued to compose and perform music throughout his life, and he remained a beloved figure in the Canadian music scene until his death in 2019. His innovative approach to music and his ability to blend different styles and genres continue to inspire musicians and composers today.
