Schola Cantorum is a classical music choir that was founded in 1964 by Knut Nystedt, a Norwegian composer and conductor. The choir is based in Oslo, Norway, and is known for its exceptional performances of sacred music. The choir began as a small group of singers who were interested in exploring the rich tradition of choral music. Under Nystedt's leadership, the choir quickly grew in size and reputation, and soon became one of the most respected choral ensembles in Norway. Over the years, Schola Cantorum has performed a wide range of music, from medieval chants to contemporary works. The choir has also collaborated with many of the world's leading composers and conductors, including Arvo Pärt, John Rutter, and Eric Whitacre. One of the highlights of Schola Cantorum's career was their performance at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway. The choir performed a specially commissioned piece by Nystedt, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. Schola Cantorum has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1991, the choir was awarded the prestigious Spellemannprisen, Norway's highest music award, for their album "Nystedt: Sacred Choral Works." The choir has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, and has won several international choral competitions. Despite their many achievements, Schola Cantorum remains committed to their mission of exploring and sharing the beauty of choral music. The choir continues to perform regularly in Norway and around the world, and is widely regarded as one of the finest choral ensembles in the world.
