Threni: id est Lamentationes Jerimiæ Prophetæ is a choral work composed by Igor Stravinsky between 1957 and 1958. The piece was premiered on September 23, 1958, in Venice, Italy, as part of the Venice Biennale. The work is based on the biblical Book of Lamentations, which is traditionally attributed to the prophet Jeremiah. Threni is divided into six movements, each corresponding to a chapter of the Book of Lamentations. The first movement, "Incipit Lamentatio," sets the tone for the entire work with its mournful and dissonant opening. The second movement, "De Elegia Prima," features a solo soprano singing a lament over a sparse accompaniment. The third movement, "De Elegia Secunda," is a duet between a tenor and a baritone, with the choir providing a background of dissonant harmonies. The fourth movement, "De Elegia Tertia," is a choral setting of the text "Recordare, Domine," which is a plea for mercy. The fifth movement, "De Elegia Quarta," is a solo for mezzo-soprano, accompanied by a solo cello. The final movement, "De Elegia Quinta," is a choral setting of the text "Vau," which is a lament for the destruction of Jerusalem. Threni is characterized by its use of dissonant harmonies, complex rhythms, and angular melodies. Stravinsky's use of serial techniques is also evident in the work, particularly in the third movement. The piece is scored for a large orchestra, including a large choir, soloists, and a variety of percussion instruments. Threni is considered one of Stravinsky's most challenging works, both for performers and audiences. Its complex harmonies and dissonant textures require a high level of musicianship and attention to detail. However, the work is also considered one of Stravinsky's most powerful and moving compositions, with its intense emotional impact and profound sense of mourning.
