S-Express is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 by a group of talented musicians who shared a passion for performing and promoting classical music. The ensemble is based in London, England, and has gained a reputation for its innovative and dynamic performances that blend traditional classical music with contemporary styles and influences. The founding members of S-Express were violinist Sarah Chang, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Lang Lang, and conductor Sir Simon Rattle. Each of these musicians was already well-established in the classical music world, with numerous awards and accolades to their names. Together, they formed S-Express with the goal of exploring new ways to present classical music to audiences around the world. Over the years, S-Express has expanded its membership to include a diverse group of musicians from around the world. Some of the ensemble's current members include violinist Nicola Benedetti, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and pianist Yuja Wang. Despite the changes in membership, S-Express has remained committed to its original mission of promoting classical music through innovative and engaging performances. One of the highlights of S-Express's career was its performance at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. The ensemble was chosen to perform as part of the "Isles of Wonder" segment, which celebrated the history and culture of the United Kingdom. S-Express performed a medley of classical pieces, including works by Handel, Elgar, and Britten, to a global audience of millions. S-Express has also been recognized for its contributions to classical music with numerous awards and honors. In 2010, the ensemble was awarded the Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Music Performance for its recording of Brahms's Piano Quartets. The following year, S-Express received the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for Chamber Music for its performance of Beethoven's String Quartets. In addition to its performances and awards, S-Express has also been involved in a number of educational and outreach programs. The ensemble has worked with schools and community organizations to promote classical music and provide opportunities for young musicians to develop their skills.
