Karl Stobbe is a renowned Canadian violinist who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1972, Stobbe showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of four. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a professional cellist and his mother a pianist. Stobbe's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Stobbe's early musical education was at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where he studied with renowned violinist and pedagogue Erika Raum. He later went on to study at the University of Manitoba with Oleg Pokhanovski and Gwen Hoebig. Stobbe's talent was evident from an early age, and he won numerous awards and competitions, including the Canadian Music Competition, the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition, and the Shean Strings Competition. After completing his studies, Stobbe began his professional career as a soloist and chamber musician. He has performed with many of Canada's leading orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Stobbe has also performed internationally, including in the United States, Europe, and Asia. One of Stobbe's most significant achievements was his appointment as concertmaster of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in 2006. As concertmaster, Stobbe was responsible for leading the orchestra and playing the violin solos in many of the orchestra's performances. He held this position for ten years, during which time he helped to elevate the orchestra's profile and reputation. Stobbe is also an accomplished chamber musician and has performed with many of Canada's leading chamber ensembles, including the Gryphon Trio, the New Orford String Quartet, and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many of Canada's leading musicians, including pianist Angela Cheng, cellist Shauna Rolston, and violinist James Ehnes. In addition to his performing career, Stobbe is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught at the University of Manitoba, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Ottawa. He has also given masterclasses and workshops throughout Canada and the United States. Stobbe's talent and dedication to his craft have been recognized with numerous awards and accolades. In 2001, he was awarded the Sylva Gelber Foundation Award, which is given annually to the most talented Canadian musician under the age of 30. He has also been awarded the Canada Council for the Arts' Virginia Parker Prize, the Manitoba Arts Council's Award of Distinction, and the University of Manitoba's Distinguished Alumni Award. Stobbe's recordings have also received critical acclaim. His recording of the complete sonatas for violin and piano by Beethoven, with pianist Jamie Parker, was nominated for a Juno Award in 2012. His recording of the complete works for violin and piano by Debussy, with pianist Michael Kim, was released in 2018 to critical acclaim. Stobbe continues to be an active performer and teacher, and his contributions to the world of classical music are significant. His talent, dedication, and passion for music have inspired countless musicians and audiences alike.
