Todd Meehan is a renowned percussionist and composer in the world of classical music. Born in 1976 in Houston, Texas, Meehan grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a jazz pianist and his mother was a singer, and they encouraged Meehan to pursue music as a career. Meehan began his musical training on the piano, but soon switched to percussion. He studied at the University of North Texas, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Throughout his career, Meehan has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world. He has been a member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, a contemporary music ensemble, since 2002. With the group, he has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, and the Barbican Centre in London. He has also performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others. In addition to his work as a performer, Meehan is also a composer. He has written works for percussion, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. His compositions have been performed by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony, among others. One of Meehan's most notable performances was his solo performance of John Luther Adams' "Inuksuit" in 2013. The piece is a large-scale percussion work that is performed outdoors, with the performers scattered throughout the performance space. Meehan's performance of the piece at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, was widely praised for its intensity and power. Meehan has also received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2003, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study percussion in Amsterdam. He has also been a recipient of the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, the New Music USA Commissioning Grant, and the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program. In addition to his work as a performer and composer, Meehan is also a dedicated educator. He has taught at the University of Tennessee, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently the Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Meehan's contributions to the world of classical music have been significant and far-reaching. His performances and compositions have pushed the boundaries of what is possible with percussion, and his dedication to education has inspired countless young musicians. As he continues to perform, compose, and teach, it is clear that Todd Meehan will remain a vital force in the world of classical music for years to come.More....
