Born on January 12, 1937, in Stuttgart, Germany, Trefz showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Trefz received his formal music education at the Stuttgart Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Carl Seemann. He graduated with honors in 1957 and went on to pursue further studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. In 1960, Trefz made his debut as a soloist with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a resounding success, and Trefz quickly gained recognition as a talented pianist. He went on to perform with several other orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Trefz's repertoire was vast and included works by some of the greatest composers of all time, including Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumann. He was particularly known for his interpretations of Beethoven's piano sonatas, which he performed with great passion and intensity. Throughout his career, Trefz received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of music. In 1963, he was awarded the prestigious Clara Haskil Prize, which is given to outstanding pianists under the age of 30. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1977 for his contributions to the arts. One of Trefz's most memorable performances was his rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the Emperor Concerto, with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1985. The performance was recorded and released on CD, and it remains one of the most popular recordings of the concerto to this day. Trefz was also a dedicated teacher and mentor to many young musicians. He taught at several music schools, including the Stuttgart Conservatory and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. His students included some of the most talented pianists of their generation, many of whom went on to have successful careers in music. Sadly, Trefz passed away on December 28, 1992, at the age of 55. His contributions to the world of music continue to be celebrated and remembered to this day.
