Oviedo Filarmonia is a classical music orchestra based in the city of Oviedo, Spain. The orchestra was founded in 1991 by the Asturian government with the aim of promoting classical music in the region. Since then, it has become one of the most important cultural institutions in Asturias and has gained recognition both nationally and internationally. The orchestra's first conductor was Maximiano Valdés, who led the orchestra until 2008. During his tenure, the orchestra gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. Valdés was succeeded by Marzio Conti, who continued to build on the orchestra's success. One of the highlights of Oviedo Filarmonia's early years was its performance at the 1992 World Expo in Seville. The orchestra was invited to perform at the Spanish Pavilion, where it played a program of Spanish and Asturian music to great acclaim. This performance helped to raise the orchestra's profile and led to more invitations to perform at major festivals and venues. In 1995, Oviedo Filarmonia made its debut at the Teatro Real in Madrid, one of the most prestigious opera houses in Spain. The orchestra performed Verdi's Requiem under the baton of Maximiano Valdés, receiving a standing ovation from the audience. This performance marked a turning point for the orchestra, as it demonstrated its ability to perform at the highest level. Over the years, Oviedo Filarmonia has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors. Some of the most notable include Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Juan Diego Flórez, and Lang Lang. The orchestra has also worked with conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, and Daniel Barenboim. In 2003, Oviedo Filarmonia was awarded the National Music Prize by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. This award recognized the orchestra's contribution to the development of classical music in Spain and its commitment to promoting Asturian culture. In recent years, Oviedo Filarmonia has continued to expand its repertoire and reach new audiences. The orchestra has performed at major festivals such as the Santander International Festival and the Peralada Festival, as well as at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2019, Oviedo Filarmonia celebrated its 25th anniversary with a series of concerts and events. The orchestra performed a special program featuring works by Asturian composers, as well as a gala concert with Plácido Domingo. Throughout its history, Oviedo Filarmonia has remained committed to its mission of promoting classical music and Asturian culture. The orchestra has played an important role in the cultural life of Asturias and has helped to raise the profile of classical music in Spain.
