Third Coast Percussion is a Chicago-based classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their innovative and dynamic performances since their founding in 2005. The group is comprised of four members: David Skidmore, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, and Sean Connors. Each member brings a unique set of skills and experiences to the group, resulting in a cohesive and dynamic ensemble that has earned critical acclaim and numerous awards. The group was founded by Skidmore, Dillon, and Martin while they were studying at Northwestern University. They were drawn together by their shared passion for percussion and desire to explore the possibilities of the genre. They began performing together and quickly gained a reputation for their innovative and engaging performances. In 2008, Connors joined the group, completing the quartet and solidifying their sound. Third Coast Percussion has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Opera House in London. They have collaborated with a wide range of artists, from classical musicians to indie rock bands, and have commissioned and premiered numerous works by contemporary composers. One of the group's most notable performances was their collaboration with composer Augusta Read Thomas on the piece "Resounding Earth." The piece, which was commissioned by Third Coast Percussion, features over 125 bells from around the world and explores the sonic possibilities of these unique instruments. The piece was premiered in 2012 and has since been performed around the world, earning critical acclaim and numerous awards. In addition to their performances, Third Coast Percussion is committed to education and outreach. They have worked with students of all ages, from elementary school to college, and have led workshops and masterclasses around the world. They are also the ensemble-in-residence at the University of Notre Dame, where they work with students and faculty to explore the possibilities of percussion. Third Coast Percussion has received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2017, they won a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance for their album "Third Coast Percussion | Steve Reich." The album features four works by the iconic composer, including "Mallet Quartet," which was written specifically for Third Coast Percussion. The group has also been awarded the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as the "genius grant," which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their field.
