Born on May 26, 1976, in Turku, Finland, Vänskä grew up in a musical family. Her father was a conductor and her mother was a pianist, so it was only natural that Vänskä would develop a love for music at a young age. Vänskä began playing the violin when she was just four years old. She showed a natural talent for the instrument and quickly progressed in her studies. By the time she was a teenager, Vänskä was already performing in orchestras and winning competitions. In 1994, Vänskä moved to the United States to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. There, she studied under the renowned violinist Jaime Laredo. She also had the opportunity to perform with some of the world's top orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. After graduating from the Curtis Institute in 1998, Vänskä moved to Australia to join the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO). She quickly became one of the ACO's most prominent members, and her performances with the orchestra received critical acclaim. In 2005, Vänskä was appointed as the ACO's leader, a position she held until 2008. During her time as leader, Vänskä helped to establish the ACO as one of the world's leading chamber orchestras. She also had the opportunity to perform with some of the world's top soloists, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Angela Hewitt. In addition to her work with the ACO, Vänskä has also performed as a soloist with many of the world's top orchestras. She has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Vänskä has also won numerous awards for her performances. In 2003, she was awarded the Australian Entertainment Industry's Classical Performer of the Year award.
