Marthe Keller is a Swiss actress and opera director who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born on January 28, 1945, in Basel, Switzerland, Keller grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a conductor and her mother was a singer, so it was only natural that she would develop a love for music at a young age. Keller began her career as an actress in the 1960s, appearing in several films and television shows in Switzerland and Germany. She made her international debut in 1969 in the film "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz," which was directed by Ted Kotcheff. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to launch Keller's career in Hollywood. Over the next few years, Keller appeared in several films, including "Marathon Man" (1976) and "Black Sunday" (1977). She also worked with some of the most respected directors in the industry, including William Friedkin, Sydney Pollack, and Fred Zinnemann. Despite her success in Hollywood, Keller never lost her love for classical music. In fact, she began to explore her passion for opera in the 1980s, when she was asked to direct a production of "Don Giovanni" at the Salzburg Festival. The production was a huge success, and it marked the beginning of Keller's career as an opera director. Since then, Keller has directed several productions at some of the most prestigious opera houses in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. She has also worked with some of the most talented musicians and singers in the industry, including Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, and Anna Netrebko. One of Keller's most memorable productions was a 2004 staging of "La Traviata" at the Paris Opera. The production was praised for its innovative staging and its powerful performances, and it helped to cement Keller's reputation as one of the most talented opera directors of her generation. In addition to her work as an opera director, Keller has also continued to act in films and television shows. She has appeared in several French films, including "The Truth About Charlie" (2002) and "The Valet" (2006), and she has also worked on several American television shows, including "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and "The Romanoffs." Throughout her career, Keller has received numerous awards and honors for her work in both film and opera. In 1980, she was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government, and in 2003, she was awarded the Legion of Honor, the highest civilian award in France. She has also received several awards for her work as an opera director, including the Golden Mask Award in Russia and the Laurence Olivier Award in the UK. Despite her many accomplishments, Keller remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to work tirelessly to bring the beauty and power of classical music to audiences around the world, and she remains an inspiration to musicians and artists everywhere.
