Her parents were John Richardson Illingworth, a businessman, and Catherine Scales, a nurse. Prunella was the youngest of three children and grew up in a musical family. Her father played the piano, and her mother sang in a choir. Prunella showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. She was a gifted musician and quickly progressed to more advanced pieces. She also had a beautiful singing voice and began taking singing lessons at the age of eight. Her talent was recognized by her music teacher, who encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Prunella attended the Royal College of Music in London, where she studied piano and voice. She was an exceptional student and won several awards for her performances. After graduating, she began performing in concerts and recitals throughout Europe.
