The 'Sonata del Decamerón Negro' is a sonata for guitar No. 3 composed by the Cuban composer and guitarist Leo Brouwer. It was composed in 1981 and premiered in the same year by the Spanish guitarist, Alirio Diaz. The sonata is inspired by the stories of the 'Decameron', a collection of novellas by the Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio. The sonata is divided into four movements, each of which is named after a character from the 'Decameron'. The first movement, 'El Arpa del Guerrero' (The Warrior's Harp), is a lively and rhythmic piece that evokes the sound of a medieval harp. The second movement, 'La Huida de los Amantes por el Valle de los Ecos' (The Flight of the Lovers through the Valley of Echoes), is a slow and melancholic piece that uses echo effects to create a sense of distance and longing. The third movement, 'Balada de la Doncella Enamorada' (Ballad of the Enamored Maiden), is a romantic and lyrical piece that features a beautiful melody played over a simple accompaniment. The final movement, 'La Danza de las Hachas' (The Dance of the Axes), is a fast and energetic piece that uses percussive effects to create the sound of axes chopping wood. The 'Sonata del Decamerón Negro' is characterized by its use of traditional Latin American rhythms and melodies, as well as its incorporation of elements of medieval and Renaissance music. Brouwer's use of echo effects and percussive techniques creates a unique and evocative sound that is both modern and timeless. The sonata is considered one of Brouwer's most important works for guitar and has become a staple of the classical guitar repertoire.
