The libretto was written by Giovanni Bertati and the opera was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 26 December 1786. The plot of the opera revolves around the character of Don Giulio, a wealthy nobleman who is in love with the beautiful Rosina. However, Rosina is already engaged to Don Alvaro, a Spanish nobleman. Don Giulio, determined to win Rosina's heart, decides to help Don Alvaro pay off his debts, hoping that this act of generosity will make Rosina fall in love with him instead. Don Alvaro, unaware of Don Giulio's true intentions, is grateful for his help and becomes his friend. However, when he discovers Don Giulio's true motives, he becomes angry and decides to challenge him to a duel. In the end, Don Giulio and Don Alvaro reconcile and Rosina chooses to marry Don Alvaro, realizing that he is the man she truly loves. The music of "I nemici generosi" is characterized by its lively and playful melodies, typical of the opera buffa genre. The opera features several memorable arias, duets, and ensembles, including the famous duet "Non ti credo ingrato" sung by Don Giulio and Don Alvaro. "I nemici generosi" was a great success when it premiered in Milan and quickly became one of Cimarosa's most popular operas. It was later performed in several other cities throughout Europe, including Vienna, Paris, and London.
