Hezarfen Concerto, Op. 39 is a contemporary classical composition by the Turkish composer and pianist Fazil Say. The concerto was composed in 2010 and premiered on October 9, 2010, at the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall in Istanbul, Turkey. The piece is dedicated to the memory of Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi, a legendary Ottoman aviator who is said to have flown from the Galata Tower in Istanbul to the other side of the Bosphorus in the 17th century. The concerto consists of three movements, each of which is inspired by a different aspect of Hezarfen's story. The first movement, titled "Galata," is a lively and rhythmic piece that evokes the excitement and anticipation of Hezarfen's flight. The second movement, "Bosphorus," is a slower and more contemplative piece that reflects the beauty and serenity of the Bosphorus Strait. The final movement, "Flight," is a fast and virtuosic piece that captures the thrill and exhilaration of Hezarfen's flight. The concerto is characterized by its use of Turkish folk music elements, including traditional rhythms and melodies, as well as its incorporation of Western classical music techniques. The piece features a solo piano accompanied by a full orchestra, with the piano often taking on a virtuosic role. The concerto also includes a number of percussion instruments, including the darbuka, a traditional Turkish drum. Overall, Hezarfen Concerto, Op. 39 is a dynamic and engaging piece that pays tribute to the legacy of Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi while also showcasing Fazil Say's unique blend of Turkish and Western musical influences.
