Noch lag die Schöpfung (after Schubert) is a contemporary classical composition by Markus Hinz. The piece was composed in 2015 and premiered on October 17th of the same year in the St. Michaelis Church in Hamburg, Germany. The composition is divided into three movements, each of which is based on a different Schubert song. The first movement is based on Schubert's "Gretchen am Spinnrade" and is characterized by a hauntingly beautiful melody played on the violin. The second movement is based on "Der Tod und das Mädchen" and features a mournful cello solo accompanied by a sparse piano accompaniment. The final movement is based on "Erlkönig" and is the most dramatic of the three, featuring a frenzied piano part and a soaring violin melody. One of the most striking characteristics of Noch lag die Schöpfung is the way in which Hinz has taken Schubert's original songs and transformed them into something entirely new. While the melodies and harmonies of the original songs are still recognizable, Hinz has added his own unique voice to the music, creating a work that is both familiar and fresh. Another notable characteristic of the piece is the way in which Hinz has used the different instruments to create a sense of drama and tension. The violin and cello solos in the second and third movements, for example, are particularly effective in conveying the emotional weight of the music. Overall, Noch lag die Schöpfung is a powerful and moving work that showcases Hinz's skill as a composer and his ability to take inspiration from the past while creating something new and original.
