"Post-modern Homages" is a contemporary classical composition by American composer Stephen Hartke. The piece was composed in 1990 and premiered on March 3, 1991, by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen. The composition consists of three movements, each of which pays homage to a different composer. The first movement, titled "Homage to Ives," is a tribute to the American composer Charles Ives. The movement features complex rhythms and harmonies, as well as quotations from Ives' works. The second movement, "Homage to Stravinsky," pays tribute to the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. The movement features a driving rhythm and a prominent use of percussion, as well as references to Stravinsky's works, including "The Rite of Spring." The final movement, "Homage to Ravel," is a tribute to the French composer Maurice Ravel. The movement features lush harmonies and a dreamy, impressionistic quality, as well as references to Ravel's works, including "Bolero." Overall, "Post-modern Homages" is characterized by its eclectic style, which draws on a variety of musical traditions and influences. The piece also showcases Hartke's skill as a composer, particularly in his ability to seamlessly integrate quotations and references to other composers' works into his own compositions.
