"Follet" is a zarzuela composed by Enriqué Granados in 1902. The plot revolves around the love story of a young couple, Follet and Rosaura, who are separated by their families due to their social differences. Follet is a poor musician, while Rosaura is the daughter of a wealthy businessman. Despite their families' objections, the couple continues to meet secretly and plan their future together. The opera is divided into three movements. The first movement introduces the characters and their situation. The second movement is the most dramatic, as the families discover the couple's secret meetings and forbid them from seeing each other. The third movement is the resolution, as the couple finds a way to be together despite their families' objections. One of the characteristics of "Follet" is its use of traditional Spanish music, including flamenco and regional folk songs. Granados also incorporates elements of French impressionism, particularly in the use of chromatic harmonies and delicate textures. "Follet" premiered on May 21, 1902, at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid. It was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and helped establish Granados as one of the leading composers of zarzuela in Spain. Overall, "Follet" is a charming and romantic opera that showcases Granados' skill as a composer and his love for traditional Spanish music. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its timeless themes of love and social class, which continue to resonate with audiences today.
