Das Hollandweibchen is an operetta composed by Emmerich Kálmán, with a libretto by Julius Brammer and Alfred Grünwald. The operetta premiered on December 11, 1920, at the Johann Strauss Theater in Vienna, Austria. The plot of the operetta revolves around the character of Gretel, a young Dutch girl who falls in love with a German officer named Karl. However, their love is forbidden due to the ongoing war between their countries. Gretel's father, a Dutch patriot, disapproves of their relationship and tries to keep them apart. Meanwhile, Karl's superior officer, Colonel von Schönberg, also has feelings for Gretel and tries to win her over. The operetta is set against the backdrop of the Dutch countryside, with scenes taking place in a windmill, a tulip field, and a Dutch village. The music is characterized by Kálmán's signature blend of Viennese operetta and Hungarian folk music, with lively dance numbers and romantic ballads. Das Hollandweibchen was a commercial success, with over 200 performances in Vienna alone. It was also performed in other cities throughout Europe, including Berlin, Budapest, and Prague. The operetta's popularity was due in part to its timely subject matter, as it was written and premiered during the aftermath of World War I. Despite its success, Das Hollandweibchen has not remained as popular as some of Kálmán's other works, such as Die Csárdásfürstin and Gräfin Mariza. However, it remains an important example of the Viennese operetta tradition and a testament to Kálmán's talent as a composer.
