Johann Friedrich Doles was a German composer and musician who lived from 1715 to 1797. He was a student of Johann Sebastian Bach and later became the music director at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, where Bach had also worked. Doles composed a number of works, including cantatas, oratorios, and instrumental music. One of Doles' most famous works is his cantata "Wer bin ich, Herr?" (Who am I, Lord?). The cantata was composed in 1755 and premiered in Leipzig on the 19th Sunday after Trinity that same year. The cantata is divided into six movements and is scored for four vocal soloists (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass), choir, and orchestra. The first movement is an aria for the bass soloist, who sings the words "Wer bin ich, Herr?" The music is slow and contemplative, with a simple melody and accompaniment. The second movement is a recitative for the tenor soloist, who sings about the uncertainty and confusion of the human condition. The third movement is an aria for the alto soloist, who sings about the comfort and guidance that can be found in God's love. The music is gentle and flowing, with a lyrical melody and delicate accompaniment. The fourth movement is a recitative for the soprano soloist, who sings about the need for humility and repentance. The fifth movement is a duet for the soprano and tenor soloists, who sing about the joy and peace that can be found in God's grace. The music is lively and energetic, with a playful melody and lively accompaniment. The final movement is a chorale, in which the choir sings a hymn of praise and thanksgiving. The music is grand and majestic, with a powerful melody and rich harmonies. Overall, "Wer bin ich, Herr?" is a beautiful and contemplative work that explores themes of identity, uncertainty, and faith. The music is simple and elegant, with a focus on melody and harmony rather than virtuosic display. The cantata is a testament to Doles' skill as a composer and his deep understanding of the human condition.
