The piece was composed in 2015 and premiered on October 22, 2015, at the Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur in Montreal, Canada. The composition is divided into five movements, each inspired by a different Cantiga de Santa Maria, a collection of 420 poems and songs dedicated to the Virgin Mary, written in Galician-Portuguese during the 13th century. The movements are titled "Cantiga 10," "Cantiga 100," "Cantiga 166," "Cantiga 353," and "Cantiga 384." The first movement, "Cantiga 10," is characterized by a lively and rhythmic melody, featuring the sound of the oud, a traditional Middle Eastern stringed instrument. The second movement, "Cantiga 100," is more contemplative, with a slower tempo and a haunting melody played on the kamancheh, a bowed string instrument from Iran. The third movement, "Cantiga 166," is a lively and energetic piece, featuring the sound of the tombak, a Persian hand drum. The fourth movement, "Cantiga 353," is a more meditative piece, with a slow and mournful melody played on the setar, a Persian lute. The final movement, "Cantiga 384," is a joyful and celebratory piece, featuring a lively melody played on the tar, a Persian long-necked, waisted instrument. The piece ends with a rousing crescendo, bringing the composition to a triumphant close. Overall, 'L'ivresse de koumiss (after the Cantigas de Santa Maria)' is a unique and innovative musical composition that blends traditional Middle Eastern and Persian instruments with the medieval poetry and music of the Cantigas de Santa Maria. The result is a rich and vibrant musical tapestry that celebrates the beauty and diversity of different cultures and traditions.More....
