Ludvig Matthias Lindeman was a Norwegian composer and organist who lived from 1812 to 1887. He is best known for his work as a collector and arranger of Norwegian folk music, but he also composed a number of original works, including the choral piece "Påskemorgen" (Easter Morning). "Påskemorgen" was composed in 1864 and premiered the same year at the Easter service at the Oslo Cathedral. The piece is written for four-part choir and organ, and it consists of three movements. The first movement is a slow and solemn introduction, with the choir singing the words "Påskemorgen slukker sorgen" (Easter morning dispels sorrow). The organ provides a simple accompaniment, with sustained chords and occasional flourishes. The second movement is more lively and joyful, with the choir singing "Kristus er oppstanden" (Christ is risen). The organ provides a more complex accompaniment, with fast arpeggios and runs. The third movement returns to the slower and more solemn mood of the first, with the choir singing "Halleluja, vår frelser lever" (Hallelujah, our savior lives). The organ provides a rich and full accompaniment, with full chords and pedal notes. Overall, "Påskemorgen" is a beautiful and moving piece of choral music, with a strong sense of Norwegian folk tradition. Lindeman's use of simple harmonies and melodies, combined with the rich textures of the organ, creates a powerful and emotional experience for the listener. It is a fitting tribute to the joy and hope of Easter morning.
