L'Adriano, later revised as Adriano in Siria, is an opera seria composed by Vincenzo Ciampi. The opera was first composed in 1732 and revised in 1740. The premiere of the revised version took place in Naples in 1740. The plot of the opera revolves around the Roman Emperor Hadrian, who falls in love with the Queen of Syria, Emirena. However, Emirena is already engaged to Farnaspe, the Prince of Parthia. Hadrian, who is determined to win Emirena's love, disguises himself as Farnaspe and enters the court of Syria. Emirena is initially fooled by Hadrian's disguise, but eventually discovers his true identity. The opera ends with Hadrian renouncing his love for Emirena and allowing her to marry Farnaspe. The opera is divided into three acts and features arias, recitatives, and ensemble pieces. The music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, elaborate ornamentation, and use of the da capo aria form. The vocal writing is demanding, with virtuosic coloratura passages and expressive recitatives. Adriano in Siria was well-received at its premiere and became one of Ciampi's most popular works. The opera was performed throughout Italy and was also staged in Vienna and London. The opera's success can be attributed to its compelling storyline, memorable music, and strong vocal writing. Overall, L'Adriano, later revised as Adriano in Siria, is a significant work in the history of opera seria. Its popularity and influence can still be felt today, and it remains a staple of the operatic repertoire.
