Pierre Octave Ferroud was a French composer who lived from 1900 to 1936. He was a member of the group of composers known as Les Six, who were active in Paris during the 1920s. Ferroud's Types for piano is a collection of five short pieces that he composed in 1920. The work was premiered in Paris on May 25, 1921, by the pianist Marcelle Meyer. The first movement of Types for piano is titled "Sarabande" and is characterized by its slow, stately tempo and its use of a descending bass line. The second movement, "Tango," is a lively dance in a syncopated rhythm. The third movement, "Valse," is a waltz that features a lilting melody and a flowing accompaniment. The fourth movement, "Forlane," is a lively dance in a triple meter that is reminiscent of a Baroque dance form. The final movement, "Final," is a fast and energetic piece that brings the work to a thrilling conclusion. Ferroud's Types for piano is a prime example of his unique style, which combined elements of French impressionism with the rhythms and melodies of popular music. The work is characterized by its use of syncopated rhythms, colorful harmonies, and virtuosic piano writing. Ferroud's music was highly regarded by his contemporaries, and his premature death in a car accident at the age of 36 was a great loss to the musical world.
